Directing

I have been directing theatre productions since the age of nine. Dismayed that the school musical had been cancelled, I directed and starred in my own The Sound of Music with my press-ganged schoolmates. I have learned a lot since then, and no longer use backing tapes recorded on cassettes bootlegged from TV reruns.

I bring to the craft of direction my diverse experience in music, research, producing, teaching and performing, as well as my naturally collaborative and empathetic working style and my flair for design, technical innovation and topical concepts.

I have particular interests in history, politics, climate change, feminism, reworked and reconceptualised classic texts, music theatre in all forms, and the use of video and new media in theatre.

Since founding Streamed Shakespeare in 2020, I have directed four full-length ‘Zoom theatre’ staged reading productions for the company, on shoestring budgets and in the space of just weeks each: The Comedy of Errors (2020), A Midsummer Night’s Dream (2020), The Winter’s Tale (2020) and George Bernard Shaw’s Pygmalion (2021), my own postmodern adaptation of the classic play. With its striking and original black-and-white conservative 1950s/full-colour hippie 1960s concept, The Winter’s Tale has been particularly successful, with over 15k views on Facebook and 1.4k on YouTube. We have also released a playlist of original songs from the show, written and performed by Paul Bremen and friends.

During 2018 I directed two original musical theatre productions, Millennial Opera, an opera-cabaret reworking old opera favourites, with lyrics and production by Allison Tyra, and HAUNTED, a staged reading of a new musical by Roger Gimblett (book) and Timothy M Carter (music). Videos of these productions are available on request.

In 2015 I was Music Director for Sempre Libera, an innovative and musically diverse opera-cabaret directed by Michal Imielski and performed for the Anywhere Festival, Parramatta.
